Kinexys by J.P. Morgan is the blockchain business unit of JPMorgan Chase, formed in 2020 as Onyx by J.P. Morgan and rebranded to Kinexys in 2024. The platform traces its roots to the Blockchain Center of Excellence launched in 2015 and the open-source permissioned blockchain Quorum, developed in 2016 as the first open-source blockchain built by a bank. Kinexys has processed over $3 trillion in total transaction volume since inception with an average daily transaction volume exceeding $7 billion, operating 24/7/365 with a 3-hour weekend maintenance window. The platform serves a global client base including BMW Group, Siemens Treasury, Ant International, B2C2, Axis Bank, Goldman Sachs, Apollo Global Management, DBS Bank, SBI Digital Asset Holdings, LSEG SwapAgent, Trafigura, and Citco. Kinexys operates across 8+ banks in the MENA region, with offices and operations spanning North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and the Middle East.
Kinexys by J.P. Morgan is a bank-led blockchain platform providing institutional infrastructure for programmable payments, near-real-time settlement, asset tokenization, and on-chain financial services. Its three pillars are Digital Payments (JPM Coin deposit tokens, Blockchain Deposit Accounts, programmable payments, on-chain FX), Digital Assets (tokenization, collateral mobility, fund lifecycle, debt securities), and Liink (shared ledger intelligence for payment optimization). Kinexys operates as the blockchain division of JPMorgan Chase, the largest U.S. bank.
Kinexys serves global corporates (BMW Group, Siemens), financial institutions (Goldman Sachs, Axis Bank, DBS Bank, SBI Digital Asset Holdings), payment service providers (Ant International, B2C2), financial market infrastructures, and alternative investment firms (Apollo Global Management). Eight banks are live in the MENA region, and clients span North America, Europe, UK, and Asia-Pacific.
Kinexys operates within JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A., a national bank regulated by the Federal Reserve, OCC, and FDIC in the United States, with additional global banking licenses in the UK (FCA/PRA), EU, Singapore (MAS), and other jurisdictions. JPM Coin carries the credit risk of commercial bank deposits under existing regulatory frameworks. All services operate within J.P. Morgan's enterprise compliance, KYC/AML, and risk management infrastructure.
Kinexys uses a permissioned blockchain for its Digital Payments network and the Ethereum Layer 2 Base blockchain for its JPM Coin deposit token. JPM Coin is a bank-issued USD deposit token, not a stablecoin per J.P. Morgan's own classification. The platform supports tokenized money market funds (MONY), digital debt securities, tokenized collateral, and has tested cross-chain atomic settlement with public blockchains via Chainlink integration.
